Implemented in collaboration with many researchers, practitioners and leaders in the domain of extracurricular instrumental pedagogy, this research’s goal is to study how the commitment of young musicians engaged into individual music lessons can be transformed when we integrate non-formal learning activities practiced in groups to their more formal usual learning context. Thus, the young people participating to this project will be invited to perform activities of play by ear, improvisation and (re)composition, in particular using digital technologies, during the 24 weeks devoted to the realization of the project.

To study this phenomenon, we will experiment these activities with young people aged between 10 and 14 years old in the region of Québec and Vancouver. We will also work closely with their teachers, music schools and leaders of the field to facilitate the integration of this type of activities within the practical environment.
